How Should We Say 2010?By MIKE BRODY

MYFOX NATIONAL) - Now that 2010 is here, there is one burning question on many people's minds -- do we call it "twenty ten" or "two thousand ten?" Since we have been using "two thousand" in the pronunciation of the year for the last ten years, it seems natural to just continue that and say "two thousand ten," but according to the National Association of Good Grammar (NAGG) that would be wrong. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that NAGG claims people have been pronouncing the year wrong ever since the new millennium." NAGG has decided to step in and decree that (2010) should officially be pronounced 'twenty ten,' and all subsequent years should be pronounced as 'twenty eleven,' 'twenty twelve,' etc.," the association proclaimed in a news release." NAGG is here to put everybody back on the correct path," NAGG founder Tom Torriglia told the Chronicle. "We lost the battle when we went from 1999 to 2000 -- but now we're hoping to win the war." The debate has received national and international attention. There's a Web site, www.twentynot2000.com , which has made it its goal to get everyone to pronounce it "twenty ten." Car makers are using both -- picking the longer "two thousand ten" version in television commercials for larger, more luxurious models and the shorter "twenty ten" for the sportier sedans. Also, both pronunciations are being used for the Winter Olympics in Canada next month, although promotional videos have referred to the event as "Vancouver twenty ten." The United Nations has designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity .
